Jorge: I Came to Visit and Ended Up Staying
Did you study in Mexico?
In Mexico I only did elementary school. I came here, I did not know what was going to happen here. I wanted to visit, wanted to see how it was the United States, and I ended up staying. When I first came, I had no idea they spoke another language, because I'm from the central part of Mexico. On the border I learned I had to speak another language. I didn't even know how to count money, didn't know what a dollar was. I did not know that 4 quarters were a dollar. That was the first thing that impacted me, the way of life … it's very different. It was a very drastic change. They call it [Mexico] a 3rd world country, but I don't know why. When you come for the first time and see this way of life and you live it, you can see what things are like. But when you live it, in person, it's very different. But I liked it, I liked the way of like, so that's why I stayed.
